Afterburners are still quite useful on Assault Dropships which allow you to evacuate the area very quickly. Swarm missile acceleration has been increased but their range remains the same. In my limited ADS flight training, I found that when Swarms start hitting my ADS, I hit the afterburner and either find the top of the map, or retreat to the comfort of the staging area (aka redline). The only nerf that was applied to Afterburners was an increased cooldown time. Be mindful of this and wait until it finishes cooldown before engaging in the battle again.
Shield boosters are still effective: the problem lies with the GUI. There's a video that Judge put out that illustrates this. He has very little shields and activates the shield booster. The animation shows and he starts to freeze frame: the number jumps up immediately to the boosted amount. The swarms hit his ADS and his shields drop again. When you look at the bar that shows where his shields are at, there is a bit of a delay in showing where your shields are exactly at due to smoothing the animation. In short, while it seems that your shields are being interrupted, they are actually saving your dropship. Remember, even Militia Swarm Launchers deal around 1000 damage when all 4 missiles hit, which can eat away any shields the Light Shield Boosters just replenished.
"Hardner is useless if there's nothing to harden" - I don't quite follow you. Shield Hardeners will give your shield a -40% resistance to incoming damage. The best thing to do is to stack shields and turn on your hardeners early before any incoming damage hits you. Also remember Large CA Railgun Installations hit about as hard as a 80GJ Particle Accelerator (Advanced Large Railgun Turret), so be sure to coordinate with your team to kill or hack any installations that are harassing you. Be alert for tanks sitting at extreme ranges gunning for you and be prepared for Afterburner with extreme combat maneuvers to survive.
Have you tried the Incubus lately? They just recently fixed an undesired effect that was hindering skilled Incubus pilots: a x1.1 heat buildup modifier was causing Small Railgun Turrets to overheat faster with increased rate of fire. With the unintended overheat removed, Incubus pilots now have a little bit of an easier time killing vehicles and installations now.
If you are still unimpressed with the balance pass they did with the Assault Dropship, they now sell Skill Refund tokens on the Marketplace for 38,000 Aurum. If you feel it's time to turn in your wings, you'll be able to use those skill points in other areas you might find an interest in.
